Safe medical practices at home

Paediatric population represents a spectrum of different physiologies and children should not be treated as “miniature men and women” (Abraham jacobi 1830-1919).

This spectrum includes infant to adolescents. So we have to give more care on children, which starts from breast feeding. We need to give more attention on each steps of child growth, through their health, education and safety.

Very difficult process for parents is intaking of medicines to their kids. Many parents told me that its very painful and fearful to give medicine to infants. If we use some tips and ideas we can avoid these problems . Let me say from my experience no baby likes medicine they are fear of intaking medicine, they think that its some painful process or like any. Now its available in pharmacy flavored medicines , mainly fruits flavour which are in different colors . Some child likes some flavors and some others like colors and will be okay to have medicine, in this case parents are happy to give medicine and will be much easy and safe fore them to give medicine. We have to be more care while giving medicine for infants

* Use dropper instead of spoon so it will be easy to intake drop by drop.

* After giving one medicine keep some gap atleast 5 minute to give other drug.

* Don’t give medicine while sleeping time, usually parents think that it’s better to give while sleeping so they will not refuse to intake. But this is more dangerous because there is chance of getting drug to stuck in throat and effect lungs and feels difficult in breathing.

* Position is more important while giving medicine. Always make baby to sit upright and give medicine.

* Change their concentration on toys or some other things which they love. You can give toys or musics to change their attention on medicine and they will unknowingly have it.

* If still baby keeps medicine without swallowing hold nose gently so baby will swallow it.

For toddlers

  1. Use flavored medicine
  2. Give toys or other things which he likes.
  3. Make him to have it by himself so he will be fearless of intaking.
  4. You can use dropper or spoon to give slowly.
  5. Dont give medicine forceful because they will spit out.
  6. Try to give on play time so he will take in unknowingly.
  7. Give some promises to hime so he will intake easily and happily and try to fulfill promises. So he will trust you always.
